It is not breaking news that joy, one of the positive attributes in all teachings of personal development, is a powerful tool. Yet I find it necessary to often remind myself and others that this high vibrational feeling should be present as much as possible in our lives.
True joy does not depend on circumstances. in Phillipians 4:4 in the Christian Bible, Paul reminds Christians to be glad in all circumstances and he stresses the importance of always being joyful by repeating that you should always be glad. This implies that joy, like all other emotions that we experience, is a choice that are up to us to make.We are in control of the emotions we choose to experience. Joy is a very powerful emotion. If we consiously work at being joyful, we triumph easier in our everyday life.
Every body, no matter how rich or poor, has one thing they have total control over in this life and that is their attitude. Our emotions are the messengers of our attitude. People can derive our attitude about everything by watching our emotions. Our emotions are powerful, because our actions are driven by our emotions and not our thoughts. Of course we need to think positive thoughts to experience the positive emotions that drives our actions. We must make an effort every moment of every day to choose joy above negativity.
Nero plastic pathways are created in our brains every day and the more we repeat a certain way of thinking, the easier that way of thinking becomes, just like a path that is walked on often, becomes easier to walk. There comes a time when it is such an ingrained way of thinking that it becomes automatic, and a part of our personality. Just like thinking negatively can suck us into a downward spiral that ends in depression, we can teach ourselves to think positively all the time and choose to be joyful, even when circumstances are not ideal.
You can say, yes but is it not inappropriate to be sad when we loose a loved one, end a meaningful relationship or miss that position we were aiming for at work? of course it is natural to allow yourself to mourn that and those who added meaning to our lives and we loved, but it is possible to have persistent joy as an undercurrent in our lives. The way we can think on all things lovely and always be joyful, stems from an ingrained thankfulness for all we have, had and will have in this live. We must have a childlike wonder for even the most mundane things in our lives and look with fresh eyes at the world around us. A child can be endlessly fascinated by the patterns on a leave, an ant walking over his hand, or find joy in the flow of a stream and the pale light of the moon. Everyday grants us an opportunity to start with a good attitude.
A good exercise to do when you open your eyes every morning is to ask yourself power questions, like: “What can I do to make today fantastic?”, “What can I be greatful for today?” and “Who do I love and who loves me?” By asking these questions, you set yourself up for a great day which you experience positively from the moment you open your eyes.
To practice feeling joyful, you can first focus on all the little things that bring you joy. like the fact that you woke up, can see the sun rays dancing in the room, get out of bed and be mobile, that you have clothes to wear and can dance and sing. In fact, singing and dancing can stimulate your “feel good” hormones and the vagus nerve that contributes to feelings of well being and therefore are powerful tools in your joy arsenal, just like praying, being immersed in a meaningful activity you enjoy and a lot of other things you take for granted, but are indeed able to help you experience more joy.
Joyful people do not complain often- they are the ones who see the glass as half full and know that every problem presents an opportunity for creative solutions. They know that in order to conquer the day, you need to overcome every day obstacles with a joyful attitude and that thinking positively and on all things beautiful and good, is much easier than slogging through the day with negative feelings in tow that just slows one down.
Joy has the ability to light up a dark and dreary day and is very attractive. Ever noticed how good things seems to be attracted to the joyful people in life? It is because darkness and negativity can not exist where joy reigns. High vibrational feelings always trumps the low vibrations. We always have a choice between being negative and positive, happy and sad, joyful and feeling down etc, but one feeling will always trump the other and it is in your power to always let the positive feelings win. Feed the good wolf, not the bad, let the higher self trump the ego, let the holy spirit in you trump the flesh every time. We always become more of that which we aspire to. Be the greatest you can be by always being joyful. Always. In all circumstances.
